What this UTM builder does
A UTM builder adds small tracking tags to the end of a web address. When someone clicks that link, Google Analytics 4 (and most other analytics tools) reads the tags and records where the visit came from: which platform, what kind of traffic, and which campaign. Without them, a click from your WhatsApp broadcast, a link in your Instagram bio and a visit from a forwarded email can all end up lumped together as “direct” or “referral” traffic, and you lose the ability to say which effort actually produced sales.
This tool builds the link for you as you type. It cleans up the values (lowercase, dashes instead of spaces), replaces any old UTM tags already on the URL, keeps any #section anchor in the right place, and warns you when something important is missing or likely to split your reports.
The five UTM parameters
| Parameter | What it answers | Example |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Which site, app or list sent the visitor? | google, facebook, instagram, whatsapp, newsletter |
| utm_medium | What type of traffic is it? | cpc, paid_social, social, email, referral |
| utm_campaign | Which promotion, launch or offer? | diwali-sale-2026, new-range-launch |
| utm_term | Which paid keyword (optional)? | cotton-kurta-for-women |
| utm_content | Which ad, creative or link (optional)? | reel-v2, header-banner, footer-link |
GA4 also understands a few newer parameters such as utm_id, utm_source_platform, utm_creative_format and utm_marketing_tactic. Most small businesses never need them; the five above cover nearly every reporting question.
How to use the tool
- Paste the exact page you want people to land on into Website URL. Use the final page (for example the sale collection), not your homepage, so the visit starts where the ad promised.
- Pick a preset such as Meta Ads or WhatsApp, or type your own source and medium.
- Give the campaign a short, consistent name, such as
diwali-sale-2026. Reuse the same name everywhere that campaign runs. - Optionally add a term (the paid keyword) and content (which creative or link was clicked).
- Keep Normalise values switched on unless you have a reason not to. It turns “Diwali Sale” into
diwali-sale. - Read any warnings, then press Copy URL and paste the link into your ad, bio, broadcast or email. Use Test link in new tab to make sure the page loads.
Worked examples for Indian businesses
A D2C clothing brand running a festive sale on Meta
Say a Jaipur block-print label runs carousel and reel ads during the festive season. The landing page is the sale collection. Using source facebook, medium paid_social, campaign festive-sale-2026 and content reel-v1 or carousel-a, the brand can open GA4’s Traffic acquisition report and compare the reel against the carousel on purchases and revenue, not just on clicks. In Ads Manager, the part of the link after the question mark goes into the ad’s URL parameters field.
A home-food seller using WhatsApp broadcasts
A homemade pickle and ghee seller sends weekly broadcasts to three lists: repeat buyers, new leads and a wholesale group. One campaign name (weekly-offer-oct) with three content values (repeat, new, wholesale) shows which list actually orders from the website. WhatsApp clicks often arrive without referrer information, so without UTMs most of this traffic would be reported as direct.
A marketplace seller building a direct channel
Many sellers who started on Amazon or Flipkart now push repeat customers towards their own store using package inserts with a QR code. Build the QR link with source package-insert, medium offline (or qr) and the campaign name of the offer printed on the card. Check the marketplace’s current policy before adding any insert that directs buyers away from it, as these rules vary and change.
An exporter or international SME emailing distributors
A spice exporter sending a monthly newsletter to distributors in the UAE and UK can use source newsletter, medium email, campaign oct-2026-catalogue, and content values for each link position (hero-button, product-grid). GA4 groups medium email into its Email channel automatically.
Tips and common mistakes
- Be consistent with case. GA4 treats
Facebookandfacebookas two different sources. Pick lowercase and stick to it. - Put the platform in source, the traffic type in medium. A medium of
instagrambreaks GA4’s default channel grouping. Use sourceinstagramand mediumsocialorpaid_social. - Never tag internal links. Adding UTMs to banners or menu links on your own site overwrites the visitor’s original source, so a sale from Google Ads can end up credited to “homepage-banner”.
- Keep Google Ads auto-tagging on. Auto-tagging (the
gclidvalue) gives GA4 richer Google Ads data than manual tags. Manual UTMs are useful as a backup or for other analytics tools, but don’t switch auto-tagging off to use them. - Don’t copy links with old click IDs. URLs copied from your own browser sometimes carry
fbclidorgclidfrom an earlier visit. The tool flags these so you can remove them. - Keep a simple naming sheet. A shared spreadsheet listing approved sources, mediums and campaign names stops five team members from inventing five spellings of the same thing.
- Shorten only after building. If you use a link shortener for SMS or print, shorten the full UTM link and test that the tags survive the redirect.
FAQs
Do UTM parameters affect SEO?
No, UTM tags are not a ranking signal. They are meant for links you share in ads, social posts, email and offline material. Avoid using them on internal links or in your sitemap, and make sure your pages have a canonical tag pointing to the clean URL so tagged versions are not treated as separate pages.
Which UTM fields are required?
Technically none are mandatory, but source, medium and campaign should always be filled in. Without source and medium, GA4 cannot place the visit in the right channel. Term and content are optional and most useful for paid campaigns and A/B tests.
Where do I see UTM data in GA4?
Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and switch the primary dimension to Session source / medium or Session campaign. For term and content, add them as a secondary dimension or build an Exploration report.
Should I use UTMs with Google Ads auto-tagging?
Auto-tagging is the recommended setup for Google Ads with GA4, and GA4 generally gives priority to the auto-tagging data when both are present. Adding manual tags as well is harmless and helps if you also use another analytics tool or a CRM that reads UTM values.
Is my data stored anywhere?
No. The link is built entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved.
