What this hashtag generator does
Hashtags help platforms understand what a post is about and help people who follow or search a topic find it. The hard part is choosing the right ones. Use only huge tags like #Fashion and your post disappears among millions of others. Use tags nobody follows and nobody sees it. This hashtag generator gives you a balanced set from five groups: tags built from your own keywords, niche tags for your industry, local tags for your city, branded tags for your business, and a few broad tags.
Every suggestion comes from hand-picked banks for more than twenty niches, from Indian fashion and food to real estate, coaching, pets and finance. We left out spammy “follow for follow” tags and tags that have been restricted on Instagram in the past. The tool removes duplicates automatically, counts characters and warns you when you go over the limit you set for your platform. It runs in your browser, with no sign-up and no data sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Enter one to five keywords that describe the post, separated by commas, such as “cotton kurta, block print”. Be specific; these become your strongest tags.
- Choose your niche. This loads the industry bank, such as Food & cafe, Jewellery or Education & coaching.
- Pick the platform. Instagram gives you up to 30 suggestions to choose from; LinkedIn, YouTube Shorts and X give shorter lists because people use fewer tags there.
- Add your city and brand name (both optional) to get local tags like #JaipurFashion and branded tags like #TeamYourBrand.
- Check the limit. The “Max hashtags per post” box is pre-filled for each platform. Change it if your app shows a different limit.
- Tick and untick. A recommended set is pre-selected. Swap tags in and out until the set fits your post. The counter shows how many you have picked and how many characters they use.
- Copy selected and paste at the end of your caption or post. Use Shuffle for a fresh set of niche and broad suggestions.
Platform rules to keep in mind
| Platform | What we suggest | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 3 to 5 focused tags | Instagram allowed up to 30 hashtags for years, and announced in late 2025 that it would move to a cap of 5. It also tells creators that a few relevant tags beat a long list. Check what your app currently allows. | |
| 3 to 5 | There is no published hard limit, but long hashtag blocks look like spam in a professional feed. | |
| YouTube Shorts | 3 to 5 | YouTube ignores all hashtags on a video that has more than 60, and the first few can appear above the title. |
| X (Twitter) | 1 or 2 | Hashtags count toward the 280-character limit on standard accounts. |
Platforms change these rules from time to time, so treat this table as a guide and check each app’s help centre if a post is rejected or a tag doesn’t work.
Worked examples
A handloom kurta brand in Jaipur
The seller enters “cotton kurta, block print”, picks Fashion, Instagram, Jaipur and the brand name. The tool suggests keyword tags such as #CottonKurta and #BlockPrint, niche tags such as #EthnicWear, #IndianFashion and #MadeInIndia, local tags such as #JaipurFashion, and branded tags. For a 5-tag post, a good choice is one keyword tag, two niche tags, one local tag and the brand tag.
A café in Pune posting a Reel
With “cold brew” as the keyword, Food & cafe as the niche and Pune as the location, you get #ColdBrew, #PuneFood, #PuneFoodies and #CafeHopping alongside your branded tag. Local tags matter most here, because the people who can actually visit are in your city.
A marketplace seller on LinkedIn
A founder who sells kitchenware on Amazon and Flipkart and writes about the journey on LinkedIn picks D2C / online store and LinkedIn. The list switches to professional tags such as #Ecommerce, #D2CBrands and #BrandBuilding, and three to five are pre-selected.
A small business in Dubai or London
The niche banks lean Indian where it helps (for example #IndianWedding), but you can untick those and keep the global and local tags. Type your own city and the local group adapts.
Tips and common mistakes
- Relevance beats volume. Every tag should describe the post itself, not just your industry in general.
- Don’t repeat the same set on every post. Rotate your niche tags so each post reaches slightly different viewers.
- Use CamelCase. #ColdBrewPune is easier to read than #coldbrewpune, and screen readers can read it out properly.
- Keep branded tags short and unique. Search the tag on the platform first to make sure nobody else uses it for something unrelated.
- Avoid banned or spammy tags. If a tag shows “recent posts are hidden” or no results on Instagram, drop it.
- Hashtags don’t replace good content. A clear hook, useful caption and good visual matter more. Our Instagram caption generator can help with the words.
FAQs
Is this hashtag generator free?
Yes, it is free with no sign-up. The suggestions are generated in your browser from curated hashtag lists, and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
How many hashtags should I use on Instagram?
Fewer than you might think. Instagram has recommended a small number of relevant hashtags, and announced a move to a 5-hashtag cap in late 2025. Start with 3 to 5 that describe the post precisely, and check what your app allows.
Should hashtags go in the caption or the first comment?
Both work, but the caption is simpler: everything stays in one place and you can edit it later. Putting the tags at the end, after your call to action, keeps the caption readable.
Do hashtags work on LinkedIn and YouTube?
Yes, but in a lighter way. On LinkedIn they help categorise posts for people who follow a topic. On YouTube, hashtags appear above the title and in the description and link to a page of related videos.
Why does the tool add #Shorts for YouTube?
Many creators add #Shorts to make the format clear. YouTube detects Shorts from the video’s length and aspect ratio, so the tag is optional. Untick it if you prefer.
