Preview is an estimate. Google may rewrite titles and descriptions, and truncation depends on the device and search features shown.

What this meta description generator does
Your page title and meta description are often the first thing a potential customer reads about you. In Google’s results, the title is the blue clickable headline and the description is usually the grey text underneath. Together they decide whether someone clicks your result or the one next to it.
This meta description generator helps you write both and check them before you publish. As you type, it shows a live preview of your result on desktop and mobile, measures the approximate pixel width of your title and description (Google cuts text by width on screen, not by a fixed character count), counts characters, and checks whether your focus keyword appears where it should. If you are stuck for words, the idea generator builds three description options from your page type, keyword, main benefit and call to action, using fixed templates you can then edit.
Why pixel width matters more than character count
A title full of wide letters such as “W” and “M” takes more space than one full of “i” and “l”. That is why two 60-character titles can be truncated differently. This tool measures your text with the Arial font sizes used in Google’s results: roughly 20px for titles and 14px for descriptions. As a working guide, desktop titles start getting cut at around 600px and descriptions at around 920px (about two lines). Mobile layouts differ and Google changes its design from time to time, so treat these numbers as approximate targets, not hard rules.
How to use the tool
- Type or paste your page title. Watch the bar under the field: green is comfortable, amber is close to the limit, red is likely to be cut off.
- Write your meta description. Aim for one or two clear sentences, usually around 120 to 155 characters.
- Add your focus keyword to check that it appears in both the title and the description. Matching words are shown in bold in the preview, as Google often does.
- Add the page URL and site name to make the preview look like your real listing, then switch between Desktop and Mobile.
- Need ideas? Fill in the Description idea generator and press Generate 3 options. Click Use this to load one into the checker and edit it.
- Paste the final title and description into your SEO plugin (such as Yoast or Rank Math), your Shopify product’s search engine listing, or your page’s HTML.
Worked examples
A D2C clothing brand’s category page
Say a brand sells cotton kurtas on its own WooCommerce store. A weak description is “Welcome to our store. We sell the best kurtas.” A stronger one: “Shop breathable cotton kurtas for women in sizes XS to 3XL. Free shipping across India on prepaid orders. Explore new arrivals.” It names the product, answers the size question, gives a reason to buy from this site and ends with an action, all within about two desktop lines.
A marketplace seller’s own product page
A seller who lists a pressure cooker on Amazon and Flipkart and also sells it on their own site can use the description to say what the marketplace listing cannot, such as a longer warranty, a bundle, or direct support: “5-litre stainless steel pressure cooker with induction base. Includes an extra gasket and direct customer support. Order online today.” Only include offers that are actually true on the page.
A local service business
A physiotherapy clinic in Pune might use: “Physiotherapy in Pune for back pain, sports injuries and post-surgery recovery. Evening and Saturday appointments available. Book your appointment.” Putting the city in the title and description helps searchers confirm you are nearby before they click.
An international SME’s service page
An Indian software or design business targeting clients in the UK or UAE can lead with the outcome the buyer wants and the time zone or working model: “Shopify development for UK brands, with project updates during UK working hours and a dedicated project manager. Get a free quote.” Only use phrases like “free quote” if you actually offer one.
Tips and common mistakes
- Front-load the important words. If the end is cut off, the start still needs to make sense, especially on mobile.
- Write a unique description for every important page. Duplicate descriptions across hundreds of product pages give Google little reason to show yours.
- Match the page. Google is more likely to use your description when it accurately summarises what the page offers. Mismatched or clickbait text is often replaced with a snippet from the page.
- Use the keyword once, naturally. Repeating it three times reads like spam and does not help.
- Don’t promise what you can’t deliver. “Lowest price in India” or “number one” claims invite disappointment and, in some cases, consumer complaints.
- Avoid double quotes inside the description if you edit HTML directly, as they can cut the tag short. Use single quotes or the " entity.
- Keep titles distinct from descriptions. The description should add information, not repeat the headline.
FAQs
What is the ideal meta description length?
There is no official character limit. Google truncates by pixel width, which for desktop works out to roughly 155 to 160 characters for typical text. Aim for around 120 to 155 characters and put the most important information first.
Is the meta description a ranking factor?
Google has said that meta descriptions are not used as a ranking signal. They matter because a clear, relevant description can persuade more searchers to click your result.
Why does Google show a different description from the one I wrote?
Google often generates its own snippet from the page content when it thinks that text matches the searcher’s query better. You cannot prevent this entirely, but accurate, specific descriptions that reflect the page are used more often.
How long should a page title be?
Keep it within about 600px on desktop, which is often around 50 to 60 characters. Include the main keyword near the start and your brand name at the end if there is room.
Does the idea generator use AI?
No. It combines your inputs with fixed sentence templates in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server. Always read and edit the options so they match your brand voice and are accurate for the page.
Titles and descriptions are a quick win, but they work best on pages that already deserve to rank.
